Pewter spoon. In its bowl is the scene of a dentist pulling a tooth. It is an old Dutch scene by Jan Steen (1626-1679) , actually made to be a print in the 17th century. But as the decoration of a spoon it is quite unusual. The handle of the spoon is decorated with two unidentified male heads and two (angel?) faces as well as a coat of arms with crossed keys (Vatican?).

Spoon has some traces of use, but is generally in good shape. The backside is somewhat bumpy.

Ca. 1780.

The spoon measures 3.7" in length.

Detail of Appolonia. ( Patron Saint of Dentists )

"Appolonia"

Woodcut from the Nuremberg Chronicle, 1493.

In May of 1493 appeared in the Latin language one of the earliest voluminous books, fully illustrated with 1809 woodcuts printed from 645 woodblocks: The Nuremberg Chronicle.

The story of this book is a story of superlatives. Hartmann Schedel, a medical doctor in Nuremberg who owned the most important private collection of books in all of Europe was the author. His library made the writing of this book possible. The writing and production of this book was teamwork. Among the more famous cooperators were Wilhelm Pleydenwurff and the painter and expert woodcutter Michael Wolgemut (1434-1519) who became the first noted book illustrator. His most famous apprentice up to 1489 was Albrecht Dürer who is supposedly contributed two woodcuts to the Chronicle. Poet Konrad Celtis contributed the German text which was published in December of the same year. Backside is printed with text and images.

The other saints on the front side are Abdon & Senen, Agatha, Appolonia, Serapion, Meniacus and Victoria.

On the reverse side are the Popes Lucius, Stephanus, Sixtus, Dionysius, and Felix.

Page is in very good except for a slight uneveness in the paper on the lower edge..
